The Little Cheese Shop
Just a quick recap on our cheese and chutney tasting day at the Little Cheese Shop, Hawes, yesterday.
January is without doubt our quietest month of the year. We have been using our time productively, working hard on some new product development: chutneys. Makes sense – we make cheese – why not chutneys to go with it?
We have EHO manufacturing approval, a BRC Grade A accreditation – all the quality and food safety systems in place, so we are well set to expand and add non cheese products to our portfolio.
Over the last three weeks, the three of us have made 13 trial chutneys between us which we would like your views on, with a view to whittling them down to the best 6 or 7 and start making them for sale in the shop and to our wholesale customers.
The chutneys include a range of fruity ones, tomato ones, onion based ones, chilli chutneys and some pretty different chutneys such as Lydia’s banana chutney. These are aimed at complementing our cheese.
Despite the grey, windy and rainy day, we garnered 25 chutney tasters and got some pretty interesting results. The top three chutneys so far are my tomato and chilli, Stu’s caramelised red onion marmalade and Lydia’s spicy apple (which goes very nicely with our new Yorkshire Gouda). Our results also showed that men have a sweeter tooth than women!
Our new Matured Wensleydale
We are going to continue with our chutney and cheese tasting until Sunday 29th Jan.
local goat milk from the Yorkshire Dales.
I am aiming (high!) for at least 100 chutney tasting opinions so that we can analyse the results, work out what our male and female testers prefer and start to make some fab chutneys.
So, please drop by The Little Cheese Shop, Hawes, if you have time, from Thursday to Sunday, from 11am onwards for a free tasting of cheese and chutney.
